The latest "M-She-U" offering, "Marvels", had the worst opening weekend of any MCU movie, ever, earning only $47 million domestically and $68 million globally, despite record high ticket prices. But not to rest on its laurels, it suffered a 78% drop off in its box office for its second week (another MCU record) earning a paltry $10.2 million from 4,030 theaters, domestically and $19.5 million from international markets to bring its total box office earnings to $161.3 million globally. Not good for a movie that has a reported budget of $275 million (not including marketing)--although the film was awarded a $55 million subsidy from the United Kingdom, which may be the reason that I'm seeing different production costs for the film. In any event, after theaters take their share of the box office receipts, it's pretty clear that this film will be losing substantial sums of money.
But one of the film's stars, Iman Vellani, who played the short and chunky Islamic heroine Ms. Marvel (not to be confused with another super-heroine in the film, Captain Marvel) doesn't care and says it is not her problem. Variety reports:
In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment following the movie’s disastrous opening weekend, Vellani said “The Marvels” flopping is an issue for Disney CEO Bob Iger and not for her.
“I don’t want to focus on something that’s not even in my control, because what’s the point?” she said. “That’s for Bob Iger.”
“[The box office] has nothing to do with me,” Vellani continued. “I’m happy with the finished product, and the people that I care about enjoyed the film. It’s genuinely a good time watching this movie, and that’s all we can ask for with these films. It has superheroes, it take place in space, it’s not that deep and it’s about teamwork and sisterhood. It’s a fun movie, and I’m just so happy that I can share it with people.”
Maybe she should be concerned, though. After all, Captain Marvel made over $1 billion, and her black co-star's character was virtually unknown. But Vellani had her own Ms. Marvel series on Disney+, which also happened to be one of the worst performing shows ever on Disney+. Perhaps Marvel fans stayed away because they just didn't like her.
Meanwhile, the ever reliable liberal tool Stephen King, who gloated over Texans freezing due to power issues in winter 2021, said that, although he hadn't watched any MCU films, he was disappointed over the gloating at the Marvel's failure, adding: "Some of the rejection of THE MARVELS may be adolescent fanboy hate. You know, 'Yuck! GIRLS!'" Apparently he was unaware and didn't care that the audience for Marvels skewed heavily male (65% of the audience were male)--it was the girls that were staying away.
