Hornady To Enter 5.7x28 Market

In a sign of the growing popularity of the 5.7x28mm caliber, The Firearm Blog reports that Hornady is poised to introduce two cartridges in that caliber. One will be in their Critical Defense line making use of a 40-grain FTX bullet, while the other will be part of their BLACK line loaded with a 40-grain V-Max projectile. Since this is just a product announcement, there is no further information on the loads or pricing.

  1. Once again, they keep making and marketing the wrong ammo. As an owner of two Five Seven handguns, I find it frustrating that all that is offered is "dumbed down" stuff. IMHO 40 grains is too heavy of a bullet and it handicaps the platform, velocity-wise. IIRC the original concept for 5.7x28 was a 27 to 33 grain projectile moving at over 2000 fps. At present, the only effective ammo currently available is the 27 grain SS198LF and the SS195LF. It can be bought, but it is very pricey. IDK why no one will market a 5.7x28 cartridge with lightweight projectiles and high velocity. It can be done.

    1. I can't find anything specific, but if I were to hazard a guess it is because it can use 40 grain bullets intended for the .223, and so it is cheaper and easier for the ammo companies to make a run of 40 grain bullets rather than come up with a totally new process for lighter bullets.
