They Bugged Out ... And Died

Both of the following articles pertain to the same tragedy:

The basic facts are that Christine Vance, 41, Rebecca Vance, 42, and Rebecca’s 14-year-old son had bugged out to a remote camp site in Gunnison National Forest in Colorado in 2022 because of fears of the Covid pandemic. However, the group had the misfortune of picking a campground at approximately 9500 feet elevation and during a year that would see a particular harsh winter without having adequate knowledge, shelter, or supplies.

The group had been listed as missing in October 2022, and were found in July 2023.  The area in which they had been found had been closed due to lack of accessibility (common for forest service roads and campgrounds during winter months). The trio had apparently been living in a tent, but authorities also found personal items, tarps, and a lean-to shelter built from logs over a fire pit. The group apparently had a lot of literature on how to live off-grid and a step sister said they had researched the topic quite a bit before leaving for the mountains. Unfortunately, they didn't have the experience or supplies to successfully live in the wilderness.

All were very thin and wearing multiple layers of clothes when found. It is believed that they died of starvation, the cold, or even carbon monoxide poisoning from trying to heat their shelter.

This should be a good lesson for anyone thinking that if SHTF they could just drive up into the woods and live off the land.
