There appears to have been a terrorist attack at the Rainbow Bridge border checkpoint between the U.S. and Canada in Niagara Falls. (Update: some outlets are now walking back earlier reporting that it was a terror attack, but might just be a vehicle crash and explosion--governor of New York says it wasn't a terror attack). Reports indicate that a vehicle approaching the checkpoint from the Canadian side of the border was stopped at an initial security checkpoint, then directed to a second checkpoint, at which point it sped toward the U.S. checkpoint at high speed before becoming airborne and exploding. The two occupants of the vehicle were killed.
Authorities closed the crossing at the Rainbow Bridge, as well as at three other bridge crossings between western New York and Ontario. The Buffalo-Niagara International Airport began security checks on all cars and passengers seeking to board flights there are also being subject to additional screening.
