VIDEO: Using A Small Hatchet for Survival Bushcraft

The hatched being used in this video is the ESTWING 12" Sportsman's Axe which has the advantage of a steel shank, which is handy for batonning. But the techniques shown should work with other hatchets, although I do think some of the cutting will work better with a curved blade edge over the straight edge you see on some hatchets and camp axes.

  1. Nice. I believe RockyMountainBushcraft (whose blog is also on blogspot) used to do articles in the same vein. I think "Your axe is your knife" was one of them (or something like that, it was based off an old article he'd run across written by a lumberjack).
And Hatchet was a fun read as a kid. Really poor grammar, but it helped get me interested in camping and prepping.

    1. I've also seen here and there articles mentioning using an hatchet or small axe to skin and process game.

  2. Using your survival ax as a weight to toss line as said at the end of video is incredibly stupid. You could use a branch or rock instead of risking your ax. As always take these videos with a grain of salt.
