New Church Security Guidelines

 Salt Lake has released an official communication on Security Resources and Safety Guidelines in light of "the recent tragic events in Michigan, as well as the changing security climate globally[.]" Among the points raised were these two:

  •     Only unlock necessary entrance doors and clearly communicate which doors are unlocked to attendees.
* * *
  •     Have emergency response procedures in place that include active shooter training.

It also directs bishops in the U.S. and Canada to a number for additional information on, among other things, "security training for members, [and] specialized security assignments," so there may be more options and/or leeway for local church leaders at the stake or ward/branch levels. None of these points would have prevented the Michigan event (unless the "security assignments" included a security team), but restricting which doors were open might have been enough to have prevented the "fireworks" bombing incident in Las Vegas last year.

  1. The emergency training at the temples *usually* hasn't been anything more than reviewing the fire exit maps and the standard "run, hide, fight" speeches. I wonder if they'll be willing to move to anything more effectual than that.

  2. I always told my boys to ignore whatever the teachers were saying if a school shooting happened and get away from the school in the most direct fashion.
