I'm sure that by now you have all heard of the unprovoked, brutal murder in Charlotte, NC, of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska by Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr. If you haven't, this piece from the Other McCain blog has the salient facts and some thoughts on the matter.
The liberals want to ignore this and similar incidents because it shows that their narrative about racial justice and equity is false. The Other McCain post goes so far as to accuse Democrats of being "objectively pro-crime" and accusing them of being "the psycho killer party, and the people who vote for Democrats don’t care how many people get killed as a result of their policy." (It is notable in this regard that the MacArthur Foundation reportedly gave Mecklenburg County, where Charlotte is located, a $3.3 million grant to reduce its jail population as part of a racial equity initiative). Glenn Reynolds refers to the media keeping this under wraps as their power of "rabble snoozing": "the power to keep a news story dormant and out of the general public’s notice". In fact, if there is any notice of this murder from left-wing news outlets, its only to report that the Republicans have noticed it.
Republicans are generally okay with noticing that the Democrats are pro-crime, but want to ignore any racial angle. For instance, in Glenn Reynold's piece, he writes (underline added):
The truth is, this story just hurts the narrative. The black-on-white angle hurts, but the real problem is that Decarlos Brown, Jr., is a repeat violent offender who has spun through the revolving door of the criminal justice system for years, a man with 14 arrests, many for violent crimes such as larceny, armed robbery, and violent threats. But despite being regularly arrested, he was repeatedly released.
One of his co-contributors at Instapundit, Sarah Hoyt, in her post entitled "WORSE, THERE’S ALSO USING THIS TO TRY TO START A RACIAL WAR" writes: "Yes, the assaulter was black. He was also homeless and mentally ill and possibly/probably on interesting substances. Those are more of a dispositive factor in this, as well as the fact he was allowed on the streets because 'not guilty by reason of mental illness.'"
But it appears that more and more people are focusing on the "black-on-white angle" as Reynolds put it. In his piece, "The End of Anti-Racist Liberalism," Vox Day quotes from someone he describes as "a smart, well-educated anti-racist liberal" who acknowledges that "[t]he part of me that was once an idealistic anti-racist liberal marching for civil rights died its final death last night as I watched the video of Irina Zarutska on the Charlotte light rail, being fatally stabbed in the throat from behind by a black savage I refuse to name."
What has finally broken me is, incidents like that aren’t even a surprise anymore. The frequency of brutal, senseless murders by “African-Americans”, both individually and in predatory mobs, has risen exactly as rapidly as social and coercive controls on their behavior have weakened.
Meanwhile, for anybody who’s wondering, American whites still have about the same crime rate as Switzerland. When enforcement of norms disintegrates, only intelligent people with low time preference still act civilized.
As I’ve watched us sliding down the civilizational failure gradient, the question I’ve been increasingly unable to dismiss is this: was the whole ugly apparatus of racial repression – segregation, sundown towns, lynchings -really just senseless hatred? Or was it a rational containment strategy evolved under pressure from living alongside a large, visually distinct population of low-IQ savages?
I think I know the answer now. And I hate knowing it. I preferred my innocence.
