- "Trump adding $100K fee to H1-B visa applications in latest crackdown on foreign workers"--New York Post. They need to add an extra zero or two to that fee, though. The article notes (bold added):
The White House is particularly concerned with US students shunning STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields due to foreign competition and views the presence of foreign workers as a national security threat, according to Bloomberg, which first reported on the order.
Tech companies heavily rely on the visas to get foreign talent into US-based companies, with Newsweek estimating earlier this year that 60% of all computer-related jobs are filled by H1-B visa holders.
- "Anti-ICE protest near Chicago goes haywire, feds make arrests during Operation Midway Blitz"--New York Post. From the article:
Protesters outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Broadview, Illinois, clashed with authorities Friday in a chaotic scene, and some were arrested.
Demonstrators carried signs in protest of ICE agents in Chicago, demanding that tax money go to healthcare measures instead.
ICE work in the area are part of Trump's Operation Midway Blitz to crack down on illegal immigration, that launched earlier this month.
- "Trump administration seeks a $1 billion UCLA settlement"--CBS News. The article makes it sound like the sole reason for the settlement was because the University did not do enough to protect Jewish students from Palestinian protestors. But it's more than that, as this article from Real Clear Education explains:
And on DEI, UCLA is still flouting the law. Recently, an organization called “Open the Books” busted UCLA for DEI-related grants related to dwelling more on creating racial “equity” in math, computer science, and other disciplines. That’s to say nothing of the potential violations in the Admissions department, where UCLA has likely been considering an applicant’s race, in violation of both California law and the Constitution. And at UCLA’s medical school, even the members of the Admissions Committee itself are chosen using race.
The H-1B anger is real.
ReplyDeleteIt should be. The tech companies have long gone to Congress pleading for more H1B visas claiming there were not enough American graduates at the same time they were laying off thousands of American workers and refusing to hire American graduates.
