VIDEO: How To Remove The Sticky Coating On Old Electronics and Optics

I'm sure you have all experienced it: electronic devices or optics with rubberized coatings getting sticky after a few years as the coating breaks down. I have an old laser range finder that has had this happen to its coating. Like the host of this video, I've tried different products, like Goo Gone, to try and fix it to no avail. But this video claims that plain ol' unleaded gasoline will do the trick.

  1. Odd fix, but worth a shot.
Reminds me of a time my grandfather used gasoline to get a grease stain off my pants.
(It didn't do much initially, but once we sent it through the wash, it seemed to have loosened things up enough for the detergent to work. Can't say I'd try it again, since Dawn dish soap also works, but I'll try it for the sticky rubber.)
