VIDEO: Why Don't Modern Revolvers Exist?

Chris Baker raises a good question in this video: with all the developments to modernize level action rifles and shotguns, and the advancements in mounting optics, why do we not see any modern revolvers? There was a halfhearted attempt from S&W years ago, and Chiappa came out with the Rhino line of revolvers, but most revolvers today are indistinguishable from models offered decades earlier. Even advancements such as better sights would be welcome (although, to be fair, more companies seem to be offering models of revolvers where it is easier to switch out sights, so that something more modern can be installed--for instance, I recently read that XS Minimalist night sights are now available for Colt Python revolvers).

  1. There can be some upgrades as far as sights, trigger and looks, but the basic design is a good one. S&W and Colt double action revolvers are solid handguns. Rugers are built to last forever. Grips can be changed to fit different hands. Sight upgrades is the one area where there can be improvement. Small things like trigger geometry, chamfering the chambers and better op rod security can easily be done. The red dot crowd will like to have the frame milled to accept the base for the various red dots. The basic design, tho, is solid.

    1. I think his main complaint was the lack of innovation for the medium framed revolvers, including using different materials for the frame other than steel.
