More Chinese Students--What Could Go Wrong?

The Washington Examiner reports that "President Donald Trump announced the United States is prepared to accept up to 600,000 Chinese students as part of a trade deal his administration is trying to strike with China." What could go wrong?

Court records show he was secretly conducting research for Chongqing Medical University while employed and in the US on a non-immigrant scholar exchange visa – and never disclosed the conflict of interest despite signing a non-disclosure form that he had no foreign research ties or funding.

  • "2 Chinese nationals accused of smuggling "dangerous biological pathogen" into Michigan"--CBS. One of the two was a researcher at the University of Michigan.
  •  "How the Chinese Communist Party steals science"--U.S. Embassy in Georgia. Among other things, it quotes this from a State Department tweet: "The Chinese Communist Party is seeking to build its military by exploiting American research institutions, academia, and private firms for their key technologies." It also notes that "[t]he CCP acquires others’ research by co-opting Chinese nationals, secretly paying foreign scientists to recreate research in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and sending military officers abroad disguised as civilians to steal technology and information to advance the PRC’s military and economic development goals." And that "[t]he CCP recruits and incentivizes both foreign and Chinese overseas nationals who have access to sensitive technology and information."
  • "Experts warn China uses students to steal U.S. research"--WNG. From the article's lede: "There are about 277,000 Chinese students studying at American colleges and universities, and up to 18% of them—nearly 50,000—are funded by a program suspected of espionage."

On top of the espionage, this agreement represents 600,000 university slots that potentially could have gone to Americans.
