Weekend Reading

  •  Jon Low's latest Defensive Pistolcraft newsletter is available. He includes a lot of good stuff, so be sure to check it out. I haven't had time to go through this latest newsletter in detail, but I did find this interesting: Jon referenced an article on ""WiFi jammers and school security tech" warning of the possibility of some nefarious person using a jammer to assist in committing a crime (which burglary gangs are already doing). Jon adds his own comments:

Real "industrial strength" / "military grade" jammers, especially the Russian jammers (which have flooded the market), are available on the open market (not black market, not grey market).  So they are easy to get and cheap.

They are the best defense against drone attacks.  Ya, I know there are wire guided drones.  But not many have that technology and the wires (fiber optic, fused silicon, wires ain't that long).

Ya, I know jamming can be defeated by error correction coding, spread spectrum, frequencies outside the jamming spectrum, etc.  But not many have that technology.  Jammers will always be ahead in the arms race, because they are dumb.  [That's why I carry a dumb phone, not a smart phone.]

I'm always on the look out for information on countering drone threats, so this is good to know. Drones are looking, right now, to be the future of warfare, and I suspect that we will see them used to commit crimes, particularly to surveil a target.

And just because I'm getting old myself, this popped out to me: a link to an article entitled "Adjusting Your Firearms Training As You Age." But Jon has a lot of links to training and training resources, so check it out.

  • Greg Ellifritz also has a new Weekend Knowledge Dump up, and even includes a link to my recent article on shoulder holsters, for which I want to thank him. Lots of stuff of interest, but a few that particularly stuck out for me were: links to articles on selecting and using pepper spray (since I've recently linked to an article and a video on this topic); a few articles on situational awareness (probably one of the most important subjects for a student of self-defense); a piece on the 1986 Miami Shootout and the reforms and changes that it introduced (including a detailed explanation of the criteria the FBI uses to test bullet effectiveness); some good revolver linkage; and more.
