In a meritocracy, success is earned. We no longer live in a meritocracy. Instead we live in a society where skin color, sexual proclivities, and tribal affiliation determine how success is meted out. And, there are the "ticket takers" who will sell their souls to accelerate their rise to "success."
ReplyDeleteA meritocracy cannot survive nepotism or tribalism, whether it is a literal tribe (Jews, Indians, etc.) or some other group association (women, homosexuals) that work to advance their own members over others.
DeleteIn an elite overproduction scenario, (like in acting) that's sort-of true. In an area where talent matters, it's not.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. Even where talent matters, "good enough" + tribal identity will often get picked over "best for the job".
