U.S. Planning On Seizing Kharg Island?

The Cappy Army YouTube channel has a good video (below) providing background on Kharg Island and why it is key to Iran's oil industry and, therefore, Iranian government finances. Essentially, though, Iran does not have deep water harbors needed for handling the large oil tankers. But Kharg Island has deep water around it that make it ideal for loading large oil tankers, and it is close to some large oil fields. So it has become the most significant hub for exporting oil--some 90% of Iran's oil exports pass through Kharg Island.

Iran recognizes that the island would be a tempting target. Thus, the island is well protected with air defense missile batteries and troops--or it was. Because the U.S. has destroyed more than 90 military targets on the island.  "The strike destroyed naval mine storage facilities, ‌missile storage bunkers, and multiple other military sites, the U.S. military said in a post on X."

My guess is that this is preparatory to sending in Marines to take the island. Cappy thinks that Delta Force will be used and discusses how they could use helicopters to land units there. That is a possibility, but Navy Seals could also be delivered to the proximity of the island by submarine. In any event, though, their purpose would not be to take the island, but remove impediments to a Marine landing or bringing in other troops. This would match with reports that 2,500 Marines and a landing ship have been deployed to the area from the Pacific. However, reports indicate that the ship is still a week out from arriving in the region.

The advantage to seizing the island would be to avoid an oil shock that would result from the facilities being destroyed, but remove the island for Iranian control. Of course, Israel might see things differently--they would probably like to cripple Iran's oil industry to keep the nation from rebuilding its military capabilities and would not care if it caused an oil shock to the rest of the world.

  1. Going to send a Marine landing ship through the Persian Gulf for the 500 miles at a top speed of 25mph and a transit time of 20 hours? Can you say "Fish Bait"?

  2. And leaving them on an island covered in oil storage tanks that could be targeted to fry said Marines?
