Federal has apparently released an HST personal defense (not bear defense) round in .44 Magnum. The round is advertised as being slightly less powerful than most .44 Magnum loads in order to facilitate faster follow up shots. The tests show that it indeed has less recoil than full power .44 Magnum loads, but it is still definitely a .44 Magnum based on velocity and the damage to the gel blocks. The producer of this video also tested it side-by-side with the Federal HST .45 ACP +P load as a comparison since the two loads use the same weight bullet. The .45 ACP round did very good, but the .44 Magnum was definitely more powerful which shows up in expansion even when shooting into the target with the heavy clothing and the fiber board inserts (to simulate bone).
