It's not as disgusting as it sounds. Back in the 1990's I did a sting as a Corrections Officer. The jail gave nutraloaf to the inmates who were on disciplinary lockdown. It wasn't so much as punishment, but it was easier to deliver it to jail cells scattered throughout the facility. No trays or utensils...just a styrofoam box with a slab of the Nutraloaf. What I was told by my superiors was that the Nutraloaf was the same food they were serving on the chow line that day, it was just all ground up and had a filler or binder added and was cooked into a loaf. Same ingredients, same calories as the other inmates are, it was just in a different form...ground up and made into a loaf. IDK how accurate that is, but it's what we were told. Lots of inmates refused to accept it...so my partner would eat it. He said it wasn't too bad if heavily salted and slathered with ketchup.
My knowledge of nutraloaf came from a court case describing it as being made from a week's worth of left overs all blended together and cooked like a meatloaf.
