Big Beautiful Bill Back To House

Pres. Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill" is headed back to the House of Representatives for approval of the reconciled version passed by the Senate. As the NRA reports: "This bill contained a provision that would, among other things, eliminate the burdensome $200 excise tax imposed by federal law on suppressors, short-barreled firearms, and 'any other weapons' as defined by the National Firearms Act (NFA)." While the language removing SBRs and suppressors from the NFA was removed over the Senate Parliamentarian's refusal to acknowledge such as a "funding" bill, the language addressing only the amount of tax did get approval. Presumably the House will approve the bill and it will go the President for signature.

I know that a lot of gun enthusiasts are upset about not getting the items removed from the NFA, but we still need to recognize this as a significant win. The anti-gunners achieved many of their victories by incremental wins. Even the NFA was foreshadowed by the multitude of states that had passed various gun control legislation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A partial victory is better than no victory at all.

    1. I'm old enough to have seen the progression from where almost all states only issued concealed carry permits on a discretionary basis, to a movement where we eventually saw most states move to a "shall issue" scheme, and now where a majority of states have "constitutional carry". If the initial thrust of the concealed carry movement had focused on "constitutional carry" then we would still be where we were in the early 1990s without even "shall issue" carry laws. The removal of the $200 tax will make getting a suppressor or SBR easier for many people. And because the tax is gone, it will be psychologically and politically easier to argue for removing suppressors and SBR from the NFA the next time around. And the anger over not getting it all this time may well push the GOP to get a different Senate Parliamentarian.

  2. Not a win at all. The stamp wasn't the real burden (infringement), all the other paperwork, registration, interstate travel regs, etc. are. Republicans better step up their game if they want the 2A vote.

    1. I agree that the GOP wing of the uniparty is squishy, and that the real prize is the paperwork, registration, etc. But these are often conflicts won incrementally. Look how long it took just to get the language into a bill that made it to the House and Senate floors.

  3. This is not a win in any way shape or form. The MFers sold us out again. I blame myself for thinking things would be different. There is but one party and it is corrupt beyond imagination. Theyll never get my vote again.

  4. The GOP is no friend of gun owners. Perhaps Musk's new party will believe in upholding the 2nd Amendment.

  5. I'm siding with the absolutists on this - it's a binary issue, you're either for the people or against the people. Congress, almost to a person, is against the people, and in matters well beyond suppressors.
