The New York Post reports that "Trump cancels nearly $1B in funding for illegal immigrants and race-focused programs in new ‘pocket’ rescission," when he ordered the cancellation of $810 million in congressionally appropriated funding which was unspent and deemed unneeded. The article indicates that this is only the second pocket rescission in the past 49 years. Among the items cut:
- $567 million appropriated for HHS to provide social services to illegal aliens, including through grants to non-government organizations.
- $70 million allocated to fellowships and grants for foreign academics and students in the US.
- $56 million earmarked for a Department of Housing and Urban Development program for outside organizations that provide housing counseling, "which instead allegedly fueled 'DEI-centric' agendas of Democrat-linked racial advocacy groups such as UnidosUS and the National Urban League."
- $25 million allocated to a Department of Education migrant students initiative, "which funded organizations that allegedly encouraged participants to avoid law enforcement."
- $15 million from a DHS program that subsidized cultural orientation, healthcare and legal advice for illegal aliens and asylum seekers, along with $10 million from a separate DHS program funding legal services for illegal aliens.
