In the New York Post's article, "Liberal California city plots doubling anti-American tax — as locals rage at where the money’s going," we learn that the city of Berkeley, CA, wants to double its tax on sodas at the same time there are questions concerning where the tax revenue is going. You would think that the city would be using the soda tax to provide city services of some sort. But if so, you would be forgetting that the Berkeley is in the thrall of Leftists.
The reality, according to the article, is that the tax revenue is being distributed to NGOs including Healthy Black Families, a nonprofit that is the top recipient of the tax funds, which has been awarded more than $2.2 million in taxpayer money since the tax went into effect. But the New York Post had a couple of tax professionals review Healthy Black Families' tax filings and they concluded that whomever had completed the filings was "incompetent". I guess that is one way to describe it. From the article:
Healthy Black Families listed more than $300,000 in miscellaneous expenses in 2024 — roughly a third of total spending — without the required itemization.
In 2023, the nonprofit had almost $233,000 in unexplained expenses.
“Expense allocations do not add up; officer compensation is reported inconsistently and changes in net assets do not reconcile,” Krausz told The Post.
From 2021 through 2024, the organization reported no independent voting board members, no tax-return review and no written conflict-of-interest, whistleblower or document-retention policies, Krausz said.
“The governance disclosures are troubling,” he added.
Healthy Black Families also reported $247,285 in legal expenses in 2021 and $170,187 in 2022 without explaining the underlying matters.
The nonprofit’s CEO, Wilhelmenia Wilson, who draws a salary of roughly $120,000, did not respond to requests for comment.
In tax filings, her name and title were misspelled multiple times.
But I'm sure that it checked all the correct DEI boxes.
