The reason that Americans must get a prescription for antibiotics is to prevent antibiotic resistance among bacteria. To that end, we are also warned that we should not be taking antibiotics too often or unnecessarily, and that we need to take the full course of antibiotics even if we are feeling better.
But apparently all that is out the window when dealing with the disease vectors known as the LGBTQ+. The UPI reports:
Just one dose of the antibiotic doxycycline taken after sex halved the number of chlamydia and syphilis cases in San Francisco, promising new research shows.
In the study, gay and bisexual men and transgender women [sic] who had a history of sexually transmitted infections or multiple sex partners were given a supply of the antibiotic and asked to take two 100-milligram pills within 72 hours of unprotected sex. The strategy is known as doxy-PEP.
So far the program has only been tried on gay men, but now the researches are urging that the research/treatment be extended to women, even though the research is far from conclusive. Citing a researcher from San Francisco's health department, the article points out:
While the results are promising, Mermin cautioned that they may have been skewed by the 2022 outbreak of mpox [monkey pox], during which high-risk groups curtailed their sexual activity.
Ahhh, yes, Monkey Pox, the disease that disappeared once it became clear that straight people didn't get it.
ReplyDeleteAnd renamed because liberals associate "monkey" with "black" and thought the name was, therefore, racist.
