Whoops and Cheers

The Daily Mail reports on two recent high school brawls. The first occurred at Huffman High School in Birmingham, Alabama, after two girls started fighting.

One of the students then grabs the other by the top of her hair and attempts to drag her by it, with a person behind the camera yelling expletives.

Several other teenagers can then be seen joining the mob, either to pull the two girls apart or get into the fracas themselves.

Anything notable about the school? "Around 71 percent of students are economically disadvantaged and 99 percent are minorities, according to US News and World Report." A few weeks ago, the article continues, another student there, Adonnis Xavier Bishop McQueen, was murdered: shot and left in the middle of the road. With a name like that, you just know it was some nerdy white kid in the math club.

And the second brawl? "Just a week ago, a similar brawl was seen at a North Carolina high school, leaving one student dead and another in hospital." That was at the Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School. Although no names have been released, the video shows a troop of black kids fighting, including one with a knife in his hand. As the article describes the scene:

One child, in a gray hoodie with a black jacket, backs another student in a red hoodie into a corner and then punches him repeatedly.

The pair run into the school gymnasium, followed by dozens of whooping and cheering students filming on their phones.

A brawl ensues, with one student on the ground pulling out a knife and stabbing another in the leg and groin.

As the children fled, no one was on the ground. But one of the students was later pronounced dead, and the second hospitalized.

Two ambulances were seen leaving Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School, each trailed by a police vehicle, early Monday afternoon.
