BPS notes that, now that NAFTA has been replaced with USMCA, North America represents one of the largest trading blocs in the world, and with an unprecedented level of control over the world's energy production (oil and natural gas), and could become a largely self-sufficient trading bloc--the only one in the world. The consequence that he sees is that the U.S. may abandon the Bretton Woods System or simply let it die. (Although the original Bretton Woods Agreement essentially died when Nixon completely decoupled the dollar from gold, the reality is that the system of international payments and so on, largely lived on). This, he contends, would leave countries that depend on international trade for basic necessities such as energy or food vulnerable.

The History Guy's video on the April 3rd, 1974 Super Outbreak brings back memories. I initially wondered why he didn't talk about the F5 that flew right over my neighborhood in southwest Hamilton Co. Ohio...but then I remembered that there were 148 of them in total. That was one of the weirdest days of my life because my family owned a home in Cincinnati and another home 150 miles south in rural Wayne Co. Kentucky. Within a period of a few hours, we had tornadoes pass within 1/4 mile of each residence. I doubt that'll ever happen again.
ReplyDeleteA crazy-scary incident. And according to the video, with no way to predict it ahead of time, let alone warn of specific tornadoes. If I remember correctly, the History Guy, said that even some tornado shelters had been destroyed. Glad to know that you and yours were safe.
