Britain evacuates Norway, just as it was on the verge of a victory there, and completes the withdrawal of its troops from Dunkirk, albeit having to leave behind large quantities of war material. This prompts Churchill to privately remark, after giving his "we will fight" speech, that Britain will have to fight the Germans with broken beer bottles because they have nothing left to fight with.
