One of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's plan is for city-owned grocery stores that will supposedly offer prices 30% below retail prices on a core basket of goods. The stores will be operated by one or more grocery chains, but subsidized by the City. The current plan is to open five of these stores in the poorest neighborhoods in the five boroughs--areas that are currently served by mom-and-pop run bodegas. Consequently, and this is what proves Mamdami's communist bona-fides, "Taxpayers will subsidize Big Grocery to help put mom & pop bodegas out of business, and make the city's poorest residents more dependent on Big Government than ever."
