California Universities Promise To Never Use Their Weapons Of War

The Guardian reports that a 2021 California law allows campus police to own military arms and equipment if necessary to uphold civilian safety. But the law also requires the universities to publicly disclose details concerning their stockpiles, which requirement is largely being ignored according to the article. But at least one university has promised to not use the tear gas grenades it was given by the military. On the other hand, UCLA often uses its long-range acoustic devices. No word on whether the universities will not use their submachine guns and assault rifles.

  1. Do they have the same training and status as state, county or local law enforcement? What about qualified immunity?

    1. The article indicates that the campus police at some (but not all) of the universities and colleges are sworn peace officers. Just another example of a civilian police force having weapons and munitions that civilians are not allowed to possess.
