While our coins may not have a melt value equal to their face value, they are not worthless. The lowly zinc penny has a melt value equal to nine-tenths of its face value. Dimes and quarters have a melt value equal to three-tenths of their face value. Nickels have a melt value 1.43 times their face value. Even paper currency is not completely worthless since it can be used as toilet paper or to help start fires.
