Would be tyrants copy one another in so many ways that it is as if they are following a script. One of these scripts is to disarm civilians because, as Mao Zedong famously put it, political power flows from the barrel of a gun. And so, if the civilians don't have guns, the theory goes, then they will not have political power--and certainly won't have the power to resist whatever else the government might do.
With that in mind, Legal Insurrection reports that "Leftist Brazilian President Lula Signs Decree to Restrict Gun Ownership" in an attempt to undo the reforms instituted by former Brazilian President Bolsonaro that loosened restrictions on firearms ownership in the face of skyrocketing violent crime. Lula, whose election saw many of the same issue regarding fake votes, changed votes, and other irregularities similar to those in the 2020 U.S. presidential elections, explained his reasoning:
“We will continue to fight for fewer weapons in our country. Only the police and the army must be well-armed,” President Lula said. He argued that the government “cannot allow gun arsenals to be in the people’s hands.”
As demonstrated time-and-again, this will have little to no impact on criminals obtaining guns. But it will disarm law-abiding citizens. Thus, the only reasonable interpretation of this new law is to disarm the law-abiding so they cannot resist what he plans on doing with the police and army.
The decree reduces the number of guns civilians can possess for personal safety from four to two, reduces the allowed ammunition for each gun from 200 rounds to 50 and requires documentation proving the need to hold the weapons.
It also bars civilians from owning 9 mm pistols, restricting them to members of the police and military.
The theory behind the latter restriction is to prevent civilians from using military ammunition which makes its way into the wild.
