There was a blind Russian woman--she died in 1996--who supposedly made a lot of predictions concerning human events in both the near and far future. Called "Baba Vanga," it's my understanding that either children or grandchildren have collected and interpreted these predictions and so we still get some for each new year. The New York Post has a couple of her major predictions for 2026:
- "[A] colossal alien spacecraft would enter Earth’s atmosphere, though she did not elaborate on the visitors’ intentions."
- "World War III would erupt in 2026[.]"
But the article also notes that "[w]hile some of her prophecies appear terrifying, the mystic’s track record isn’t spotless, as some predictions were wildly off base — including claims that Barack Obama would be the last US president and that World War III would kick off in 2010." In fact, looking at an article listing her predictions for 2025 ("What does Baba Vanga predict for 2025?") I don't see that any of the six predictions listed came true. (I suppose the telepathy one could be argued since there have been advances in reading and interpreting brainwaves to control computers, but it is nothing as dramatic as the what the article indicates she had predicted). She doesn't seem to have done any better for 2024. If there was any major event of 2020, it would have been Covid. But neither her predictions for 2020 or for 2019 seemed to capture that event.
If this was an episode of Mythbusters, the conclusion would have been "busted".
Anyone capable of foretelling the future should have already made millions investing in the stock market. AFAIK...none of these people have.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Even if they couldn't predict specific stocks, they would be able to predict trends and black swan events that could have directed their trading. Of course, the best way to predict how stocks will go is to be a powerful member of Congress.
