PDW is an initialism for "personal defense weapon," which is the military vernacular for "submachine gun" or "machine pistol". Why the change? I would argue the change was because it sounded more modern and progressive. Sort of like how "sanitation engineer" replaced "garbage man" or "executive assistant" replaced "secretary". But I supposed one could argue that it reflected the more limited role of submachine guns in modern militaries.
But while even elite military units and police SWAT teams have largely abandoned the submachine gun and machine pistol because they need weapons with better barrier penetration and longer range, there has been a resurgence of interest in the civilian market for semi-auto versions of submachine guns and machine pistols (which would more appropriately be termed PDWs) largely driven, in my opinion, by the availability of pistol braces. The video below explains what advantages the PDW brings to the table for the civilian defender over the typical handgun on one hand, and short barrel rifles or rifle caliber pistols on the other. It also compares different types of ammunition and using a forced reset trigger.
