Saying The Quiet Part Out Loud

From Context Video on X: Marvel actor Anthony Mackie says “Success is given, it's not earned, we are lying to our kids” I guess its a new riff on the old saying that "It's who you know, not what you know."

  1. In a meritocracy, success is earned. We no longer live in a meritocracy. Instead we live in a society where skin color, sexual proclivities, and tribal affiliation determine how success is meted out. And, there are the "ticket takers" who will sell their souls to accelerate their rise to "success."

    1. A meritocracy cannot survive nepotism or tribalism, whether it is a literal tribe (Jews, Indians, etc.) or some other group association (women, homosexuals) that work to advance their own members over others.

  2. In an elite overproduction scenario, (like in acting) that's sort-of true. In an area where talent matters, it's not.

    1. I disagree. Even where talent matters, "good enough" + tribal identity will often get picked over "best for the job".
