Revisting the Remington R51

A couple of weeks ago I had several videos on the R51 pop up on my YouTube feed. I hadn't shot mine in a while and decided I would take it out on my next trip. And while I never got around to shooting it that weekend, I was able to do a bit of shooting with it this weekend. It performed very well. Unlike most of the YouTube videos I've seen on the subject--and even some of my past experience--I had no issues with the weapon. I didn't keep an exact count, but I shot at least 5 magazines worth of ammo through it and my two sons that accompanied me also put at least one magazine each through the weapon--so at least 49 rounds--all without any feeding or ejection issues (which is more than I can say about the HK pistol we had brought along which had two stoppages).

I think there are probably three things that may have contributed to it working better. First, I had, at one time, left the magazines fully loaded for several months to compress the springs. I think part of the problem people have had with this weapon is too much pressure against the bottom of the breach block. Second, I had switched to using a gun grease (Frog Lube) for lubrication instead of oil. And, three, I used rounds with 124 grain projectiles--I had previously noted that the pistol did not like 115 grain ammo.

As I mentioned when I first reviewed the pistol back in 2016, I like the ergonomics and it points very naturally for me. The sights are good. The design is snag free and would have made it a good concealed carry weapon. And it is a fun little gun to shoot. It's too bad it had so many teething problems and didn't catch on with the public. But even if it had performed flawlessly, Remington was late to the table in introducing a small single-stack 9 mm after all of its competitors; and then the whole game changed in 2018 with the release of the P365 offering double-stack capacity in a small pistol.
