Greg Ellifritz's Latest Weekend Knowledge Dump

I finally had a chance to review the latest Weekend Knowledge Dump from Active Response Training. Everyone has different things that will catch their attention. For me, there was a link to detailed article on fitness and increasing your fitness called "The Martial Marksman Physical Fitness Hierarchy"; and a test of 38 different 9mm factory loads shooting 50-round groups from a 1911 style pistol locked in a Ransom Rest.

In regard to the latter article, there are obviously going to be firearms that like certain loads better than others, but, for the most part, the size of a group is going to be due to consistency in the ammunition: powder load, weight of the bullet, seating of the bullet, size and geometry of the interior of the case, etc. It is no surprise, then, that the cheaper plinking ammunition tended to have the larger groups. To a lessor extent, the twist rate will have an impact on accuracy. It is telling, in the case of this test handgun for instance, that the groups sizes seemed to be better overall with the 140 grain or heavier bullets. The biggest shock to me was the very respectable group from the Wolf 115 grain RN.
