A short, light and powerful rifle is a good idea. With the advent of LPVOs, there is no need for a forward mounted scope. Short barrels are kinda noisy, tho.
I like the idea of a general purpose rifle for the prepper, but I agree that Cooper's concept of a scout rifle needs to be updated to reflect current technology. I read a comment somewhere about his scout rifle being 20th Century technology used to solve a 19th Century problem. Even if it is a 19th Century problem, it is time to move the solution into the 21st Century.
