Khyber Optics: Grid Reference Graphics (GRG)

Khyber Optics has an article, entitled "GRID REFERENCE GRAPHICS (GRG): BUILDING A COMMON OPERATIONAL PICTURE," on designing and using a grid reference for use on maps or aerial views. As the article explains:

In any tactical environment, the ability to communicate locations accurately is essential. Whether coordinating a search-and-rescue operation, managing personnel across a large area, identifying hazards, or reporting observations, confusion over locations can lead to delays, miscommunication, and potentially dangerous mistakes.

A Grid Reference Graphic (GRG) is a map, aerial photograph, or satellite image divided into clearly labeled reference areas. Its purpose is to establish a common geographic language among personnel operating in the same area.

Instead of describing a location as "the second building past the intersection," a team can refer to a designated grid square, building identifier, or named reference point.

GRGs are particularly useful when multiple teams are working from different positions, using different communications systems, or interpreting the same area through ground-level observations and aerial imagery.

Besides describing how to create GRGs, the article also end with an infographic with a check list to use.
