This video discusses how the type of modern handgun (semi-auto or revolver) best for you depends on the type of self-defense scenario you might encounter. He splits this into two basic categories: shooter and fighter.
The "shooter" is someone expecting to shoot at longer distances and higher volume of fire--the producer of the video uses the example of a man who successfully took out a mass shooter at a mall at a distance of about 40 yards, although that is an extreme example. This person would benefit from semi-auto with good sights (perhaps even a red dot) and higher ammo capacity.
The "fighter" is a someone expecting to defend themselves at bad-breath distance, perhaps even at contact distance or on the ground with someone on top of them, that may have to shoot at contact distance (potentially forcing a semi-auto out of battery) or at awkward angles (that would turn a semi-auto into a single shot pistol because of limp wristing the weapon). The producer uses the example of an off-duty police officer that was ambushed and on the ground on his back trying to fight off an attacker who was standing over him (the officer in question had a semi-auto pistol which failed to cycle after the first shot because the angle of the shot precluded a strong grip on the handgun). This person, the producer concludes, is someone that would benefit from having a revolver.
