Why Google Has Become More Useless

I and many other people have noted how Google search results have become less useful over time. Part of the problem was certain websites being artificially pushed to the top either through using certain key words and otherwise optimizing their sites to draw the attention of the Google algorithms. Others were pushed higher in search results by Google simply deciding they were more "worthy" than other sites; or were downgraded because they did not fit Google's ethos of "Do Evil". This became particularly apparent as DEI rose to prominence and Google increasing decided that its role was to curate and censor what results it would show.

But in an article describing how Google's AI Overview is taking traffic away from traditional news sites, there is a short acknowledgment that Google is abandoning its core product: web searches. Instead (emphasis added):

Google has rolled out an “AI Overviews” feature in its search engine that demotes traditional “blue links” to other sites in favor of auto-generated summaries. Last month, the search giant rolled out “AI Mode” – which is expected to make the problem even worse by responding to search queries with chatbot-style conversations and few direct links.

Nicholas Thompson, the CEO of news outlet The Atlantic, told employees earlier this year that they should assume traffic from Google will drop toward zero over time, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

Google is shifting from being a search engine to an answer engine,” Thompson told the Journal. “We have to develop new strategies.”

But which answers will it provide? Certainly only approved ones. So, for instance, when I was searching the term "Black fatigue" the other day, the result from AI Overview was the old Leftist meaning of blacks being sick of whites with nothing about the newer and more popular meaning of the term.

  1. The click-free internet - Google steals your content for answers. Great way to control the message.

    1. To paraphrase a line from "The Lost Boys": "Wait, you have the internet?" "No. I just like to read AI Overview. Read the AI Overview, you don't need the internet."
