Wilder: The EBT Apocalypse

CBS News reports that "Federal food aid will not go out starting Nov. 1 amid government shutdown, Trump administration says." From the article:

    The U.S. Department of Agriculture has posted a notice on its website saying federal food aid will not go out on Nov. 1, raising the stakes for families nationwide as the government shutdown drags on.

    The new notice comes after the Trump administration said it would not tap roughly $5 billion in contingency funds to keep benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as SNAP, flowing into November. That program helps about 1 in 8 Americans buy groceries.

Thus, according to Politico, "At least 25 states plan to cut off food aid benefits in November," including California, Arkansas, Hawaii, Indiana, Mississippi and New Jersey. 

    What could all this mean?  Well, assuming that the health insurers Democrats don't back down on the Obamacare subsidies and allow the Republicans to pass the continuing funding resolution, it means that EBT cards will not be filled and millions of welfare recipients will suddenly find themselves unable to buy food. The consequence, John Wilder predicts, will be " 'Mostly peaceful' flash mobs looting grocery stores." He also predicts riots, including  that "[w]ithin 72 hours of the blackout, flash mobs of 'minority urban youths' (MUYs, in Bracken’s lingo) would swarm intersections, yank soccer moms from their SUVs."     Fun fact: The food stamp program--and the reason it is run by the Department of Agriculture--was originally intended as an indirect subsidy for farmers by boosting demand for farm products.
