If you haven't done so already, be sure to check out Greg Ellifritz's Weekend Knowledge Dump from this past Friday which includes links to articles on: how active shooters tend to pick "gun free" zones to carry out their attacks; hostage escape tools and techniques; maintaining a S&W revolver; online subcultures (with the article noting that "the last four high profile school shooters were all connected to groyper and TCC online communities"; an article on how to remove cosmoline from surplus military rifles (using an SKS as an example); and a whole lot more.
On the latter article, the best method--completely unmentioned in the article but noted in a couple of the comments--is to use boiling water to dissolve the cosmoline from the metal parts and then clean with oil and lube as you would normally do. Some people use boiling water on the wood stock and other wooden parts, but I hate the idea of unnecessarily exposing them to moisture, so I prefer to manually wipe off as much as possible with dry paper towels, followed by cleaning the stock with oiled rags (furniture oil works great). The oil dissolves the grease and leaves a nice finish on the wood. Even if you are uncomfortable with disassembling and pouring boiling water over the parts, I would recommend as least pouring boiling water down the barrels and through gas tubes because it will greatly speed up the whole de-greasing operation.
