Some Articles On Building An AR

My last AR build was a lightweight AR 308 rifle I put together about 4 years ago (see here and here). But I'm starting to look at another build--my wife forced me (I'm not exaggerating, either) to buy a lower receiver to go with an FDE upper I've had sitting around for years--so I thought I would refresh my knowledge of what I need to do. A few articles I located that I thought would be of interest to readers:

I think the FDE receivers will match up nicely with green furniture. But I'm not sure of a caliber or use for the rifle to guide the rest of my build. I'm tempted to just put it together as a rifle for one of my sons.

Weekend Reading: Greg Ellifritz's Weekend Knowledge Dump

Since it is the weekend, that means another Weekend Knowledge Dump from Active Response Training. Lot's of good articles on self-defense, firearms, and prepping. Some that caught my eye in particular:

  • An article on home defense from CCW Safe, apparently based on an interview or presentation by Tom Givens. It primarily focuses on burglaries, which is just a term that historically has meant entering a home for the purpose of committing a crime (generally a felony). I thought the following statistics to be interesting and revealing:

Tom has studied data released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, and he has calculated that each year in the United States, there are more than 3 million burglaries, and about 260,000 result in physical harm to the resident.  40% of burglars, Tom says, walk in through unlocked doors. Another 10% gain entry through unsecured windows. As an armed defender, if you’re smart enough to lock your windows and doors, the next most likely way for an intruder to get into your home is by breaking through your front door. According to Tom’s calculations, that’s how 34% of burglars gain entry.

Just by locking your doors and windows, you can reduce the odds of a burglary by 50%.  There was a string of burglaries in my neighborhood about 15 years ago--mostly thieves stealing power tools--where the burglars simply were entering through unlocked sliding doors or rear garage doors. I'm pretty sure that I didn't suffer any losses simply because my wife and I are always careful to keep doors locked, even when we are at home.

  • Last week Greg had linked to one of the sap/blackjack videos which I'd previously mentioned. Some of his readers were curious about sources of such weapons, so this week he included an article from Recoil Magazine discussing some sellers of saps/blackjacks and some of their offerings. 
  • Greg has included a couple articles on weapon-mounted and tactical flashlights.
  • He's linked to an article by Clint Smith on situational awareness and personal tactics to avoid becoming a crime victim. He also links to a Modern Survival Blog article on situational awareness.
  • For those interested in the medical side of things, he links to a paper looking at controlling massive bleeding in the groin or lower limb by applying pressure through kneeling on the groin crease, and that it did not require that much pressure. The purpose of this is to control bleeding temporarily while applying a tourniquet. 
  • Finally, I would recommend checking out the link to Paul T. Martin's article to building an emergency water filtration system.

Some Articles of Interest to Preppers/Survivalists

  •  "The Science of Survival: Wool Blankets" by Aden Tate, Organic Prepper. Fall is almost here and temperature are starting to cool off in the mountains. I was up hiking this weekend at a place that pretty much has the same temperatures in the summer as Boise, but this weekend, as the sun dropped below the top of the mountains, the temperature dipped into the 60s whereas it was still in the lower 80s once I got back out to a main road, even though the elevation drop was probably less than 100 feet. It was a good reminder that cold weather is just around the corner. So I thought this article on why wool blankets are so good for prepping--actually, wool generally as a clothing material. As you probably already know, one of the key advantages for using wool is that it retains heat even when wet, unlike many other other materials. But it is, as the author discusses, just a much better insulative material than those used in most blankets, which he backs up with some informal tests. 
  • Speaking of fall weather, hunting seasons are upon us: "How to Field Dress a Deer: A Step-By-Step Guide"--Athlon Outdoors. Not a bad article, although I wish it had been illustrated.
  • James Taylor, at Watts Up With That, writes: "MSN Pushes Rice, Sugar, Tomato Crises – Despite New Crop Records." For instance, he points out, "according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO), global tomato production is faring quite well. In fact, the UNFAO reports that global tomato production has set new records an amazing 10 years in a row." Likewise: "According to the UNFAO, 2019 saw the largest global sugar crop in history. All 10 of the largest sugar crops in history occurred during the past 10 years. During the past 15 years, global sugar production has increased by more than 33 percent." And as for rice:

    ... According to the UNFAO, global rice production set a new record in 2021, the latest year for which data is available. All three of the three largest crop years occurred during the past three years. All five of the five largest crop years occurred during the past five years. All 10 of the 10 largest crop years occurred during the past 10 years.

    The article focuses special attention on rice yields in India, China, and Myanmar. However, the growth in India’s rice production is even more impressive than the growth in global rice production. India has absolutely smashed its rice production records six years in a row. In China, 2021 was the second-highest rice crop in history. All six of China’s highest-ever rice crops were produced in the past six years. Myanmar rice production is declining – an aberration compared to the global trend – but that is because of Myanmar’s horrible domestic political situation, not climate change. As reported by Human Rights Watch, “Since staging a coup on February 1, 2021, the Myanmar military has carried out a brutal nationwide crackdown on millions of people opposed to its rule. The junta security forces have carried out mass killings, arbitrary arrests, torture, sexual violence, and other abuses that amount to crimes against humanity.” Blaming climate change for Myanmar’s declining crop production is giving a pass to political brutality and human rights abuses.

It's almost like the MSN wants us to believe that increasing food prices are due to something other than inflation caused by the fiscal mismanagement of the government.

  • Over at the Survival Blog, guest writer Rick S. writes about his experience with the Bluetti AC180, a charge controller/battery bank/inverter to use with a small scale solar system. (Part 1) (Part 2). Part 1 goes over more general issues with solar power and figuring out how much you need (not want, but what will get you by in a grid-down situation). Part 2 discusses the Bluetti AC180 and his experience with it. Briefly, however:

The heart of the AC180 is a bank of Lithium Iron batteries with an advertised life of 3,500 charge/discharge cycles and is warranted for five years. Integrated into the package is a charge controller capable of charging from a number of sources: 120 VAC house supply, car charger, or solar panels. It then is capable of supplying that stored power in a number of ways: various USB connections, a 12 volt DC cigarette lighter plug, a cordless charging capability, and four 120 VAC receptacles. The inverter necessary to convert the direct current stored in the batteries to the alternating current at the 120 VAC receptacles is integrated into the package as well.

It apparently has a full power discharge capacity of 1,152 watt-hours, which matches with his tests. He also discusses using solar panels with it and some tips and warnings about certain panels.

  • Speaking of electricity,  Ken J. at the Modern Survival Blog writes about the "Best Rechargeable Batteries AA Size." He doesn't mince words: the best are the eneloop (which he indicates are currently made in Japan by Panasonic). He notes that "[t]he eneloop will recharge up to 2,100 times! That’s a big reason why (in my opinion) they are the best rechargeable batteries AA." And, he adds: "Let me put that into perspective. If you used up and recharged this battery once a week, its lifetime would be 40 years! Once a day? Almost 6 years!" They also retain a charge well: 90% after one year, according to the information the author provides. He also gives a recommendation as to a battery charger.
  • Heading back to the Survival Blog, guest writer "J.M." has a 5-piece article setting up a local network using a Raspberry Pi, router, and NextCloud cloud server software. (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5). His goals for the project were:
    • Moderate technical knowledge – I wanted something that didn’t require extensive expertise of things like networking, Linux, etc. – just a moderate level of technical computer skills like plugging into the Internet, downloading and installing software, navigating around your computer using a file explorer and working with files. It also helps if you’re reasonably skilled at searching the web for help when you run into problems.
    • Options – The infrastructure should support a wide range of standard technologies such as Windows, MacOS, Linux, Chrome OS, Android, iOS, WiFi, Ethernet, etc.
    • Flexible cost – The core infrastructure should be under $150 USD, with both higher and lower-cost options based on your needs and budget. Note that this cost doesn’t include mobile devices/cell phones or a laptop computer, since I assume most people already have those.
    • DC powered – The ability to power everything from a 5V DC USB port or a 12V outlet.
    • Compact – The core components (excluding the laptop) should fit into a .50 cal ammo can that’s been modified for EMP protection.
    • Ease of use – The network and supporting components should be fast and easy to set up and use.
    • Expandable – You should be able to add more capabilities in the future.
    • Independent – The infrastructure should be able to function entirely on its own without any connection to the Internet, other than during the initial setup and occasionally for updates and upgrades.
    • Reliable – Something that can run for years.

The author's purposes for such a network are:

    Although not mentioned above, education would be another purpose of such system. There are numerous e-books, software, and video for teaching not only academic subjects, but all sorts of skills; and these would work well for kids (or adults) with the ability to use multiple computers at a time to access the data.

    Part 1 is an overview of the purposes of such system (why you might want one) and some of the hardware you will need to buy. Part 2 is mostly about physically setting up the Raspberry Pi. Part 3 is about plugging together the equipment and connecting to the Internet. Part 4 is about setting up the Cloud Server. And Part 5 goes over the final steps to setting up the software for the Cloud server as well as some other applications that you might want to use.

    Both Libyan and international officials said the deaths were difficult to count because the city of Derna was so heavily damaged, the security situation in Libya remains perilous, the country has no national government, and many of the dead may have been washed out to sea.

    The health minister of the eastern Libyan government, Othman Abduljaleel, told reporters that divers have been deployed to find bodies offshore. Other teams are searching for bodies in the rubble of Derna, having largely given up hope of finding survivors.

And then there is the fingerpointing:

    The day before Mediterranean Storm Daniel struck Libya, Mayor al-Ghaithi told a news conference that the area around Derna’s rickety dams should be evacuated, but the Interior Ministry of the Tobruk government ordered curfews instead.

    The mayor’s office said the dams, which were built in the 1970s, had not been maintained in years, even though audit reports found millions of dollars allocated for maintenance. Tripoli-based PM Dbeibah cited the poor maintenance record in his call for an investigation.

    The attorney general for the western government, Mohamed al-Menfi, threatened consequences for “everyone who made a mistake or neglected either in abstaining or taking actions that resulted in the collapse of the dams in the city of Derna.”

    The speaker for the Parliament of the eastern government, Aguila Saleh, insisted that no one should blame Tobruk for the horrific death toll.

    “Don’t say ‘if only we’d done this, if only we’d done that.’ What took place in our country was an incomparable natural disaster,” Saleh said.
  • "How To Survive An EMP Attack"--Athlon Outdoors. Some basic information on how to survive an EMP attack (essentially something requiring a high altitude nuclear detonation, although more local EMP effects could come from more typical nuclear detonations nearer the surface).
  • "Prepping For Widespread Major Disaster With Little or No Budget"--Modern Survival Blog. This is more than just a "baby-steps" plan as the author discusses some of the water filtration systems available and prices, cheap food to store (focusing mostly on rice and beans), advising that your best and most cost effective shelter will probably be where you are currently living.
  • And speaking of food storage: "Tuna in Oil vs Water – Which One is Better"--Modern Survival Blog. Short take:
    The main difference is this.. Tuna in oil has about four times as much fat as tuna in water. Consequently, tuna in oil contains more calories than tuna in water for the same size can.

    If you’re here viewing this from a calorie-conscious point of view (e.g. watching one’s calories), then tuna in water is your likely better choice. Though you probably instinctively already knew that.

    From a prepping and preparedness point of view, in my opinion, tuna in oil is a better choice than tuna in water. That’s because one factor we’re looking for is calorie density for what’s on our shelves (storage efficiency). Unfortunately for me, my issue here is that Mrs. J prefers tuna in water. Oh well.. Happy wife, Happy life..

 The author goes over calories in more detail as well as some other reasons to pick one over the other. One of the comments also points out that you might want the tuna oil for other reasons/uses.

The Realist: Zombie Apocalypse Movie Theater

    "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." Even under the most adverse conditions, people occasionally need a break, a mental escape, from the daily grind. Books and games certainly provide a break. But, humans also need social interaction with others outside their family or close group of friends. In the past, these social activities would have included dances or community theatrical performances. More recently, social activities can include "movie night" where viewing a movie is the central component of a larger social event.

    In any kind of apocalyptic scenario, people are also going to want some activity that restores some level of prior normalcy, even if only for a short period of time. I have seen several post-apocalyptic movies and TV shows where a scene or sub-plot in the story involved people coming together as a group to watch a movie.

    Before last Christmas, I started noticing lots of offerings on Amazon for inexpensive video projectors, with some being priced under fifty dollars. I ended up spending seventy dollars for one with reasonable lower-end specifications and a lot of good reviews. That projector performed very well considering what I paid for it. That projector purchase became the seed for the idea of a "zombie apocalypse movie theater" (ZAMT).

    The ZAMT could be part of a no-kidding post apocalyptic social activity, or it could be the focus of a less dramatic "illegal" gathering for friends during the next round of COVID lockdowns.

    I wanted my ZAMT to be semi-portable, something that could be set up just about anywhere - indoors or outdoors - and run off an independent portable power source.

    The ZAMT requires more than just a video projector. It also requires some kind of sound system because the tiny speakers built into the projector may not even be powerful enough for a small room. It requires some kind of projector screen, which can be a white painted wall, a white sheet or table cloth, or a purpose-built screen. It requires an independent power source - don't plan on the local utility company providing power to the nearest wall outlet during the zombie apocalypse. And, it requires a variety of accessories including a platform or tripod for the projector along with the various cables necessary to connect the various components together.

Video Projector

    There is no such thing as an ideal projector. Projector selection has to be based on many factors including your budget, power consumption, video input options, native resolution, and light output.

    Like many things, when shopping for a video projector, you generally get what you pay for. There is a lot of exaggeration when it comes to the specifications of various video projectors, so very careful reading of descriptions is necessary. An omission of a critical specification should be taken as an indication that the specification may not be very good - definitely a buyer-beware situation.

    Most video projector descriptions will say "supports 1080P" when in fact that native resolution may be much lower. All "supports 1080P" means is that the projector will accept a 1080P video source and down-convert it to whatever the native resolution of the projector happens to be. You want to pay attention to the native resolution specification.

    Similarly, projector brightness is overstated, with many manufacturers providing a lumen output value for the projector's light source - the projector "bulb" - and not a measure of the light output that ultimately hits the projector screen. Some manufacturers provide a more honest "ANSI lumen" number - a measure of the light that hits the screen - that is, not surprisingly, much less than the light source lumen number. Projector brightness will determine how big the projected image can be and still have acceptable brightness.

    Most consumer projectors use one of two methods of producing the image. The most common, and cheaper, is a transmissive color LCD in the light path - analogous to a slide in a slide projector or the film in a movie projector. The other more expensive method utilizes Texas Instruments DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology. There are a variety of illumination technologies used in DLP projectors, with some being more energy efficient than others.

    Most projectors also include what is called "keystone correction", which can be used to correct the trapezoidal distortion caused by projecting off-axis onto the screen surface. The very low end projectors omit keystone correction. Most projectors at least have vertical keystone correction. The higher end projectors will have both horizontal and vertical keystone correction, with some projectors even having automatic keystone correction capabilities.

    Another projector specification to be aware of is the "throw ratio". Short throw or ultra short throw projectors must be placed closer than normal to the projector screen, and are really intended for home theater applications with a permanently installed wrinkle-free projector screen. A portable projector screen will seldom be completely wrinkle free.

    Also consider the video inputs the projector can accept. Many projectors accept a variety of video inputs including composite video, HDMI, VGA (from a computer), and wireless (WiFi and/or Bluetooth) streaming. Some projectors only have an HDMI input port. Most projectors also have a USB port to read a USB flash drive, and a slot for a micro-SD card.

    Most projectors have built-in speakers, some of which sound better than others. Some manufacturers put more effort into the audio amplifiers and speakers built into their projectors, incorporating powerful audio amplifiers and reasonably sized speakers, while other manufacturers seem to treat the built-in audio amplifiers and speakers as an afterthought. I made sure the projectors I purchased had an audio output jack, so I could send the audio to an external sound system.

    Another issue not really discussed with video projectors is that many do not have a sealed light engine to keep dust off the LCD. Most transmissive LCD projectors blow air across the LCD to keep it from burning up. Dust particles can stick to the LCD, resulting in black spots in the projected image. Some of these projectors have a small access door that can be opened to clean the dust off the LCD. A few transmissive LCD projectors advertise the fact that they have a sealed light engine. While dust particles may not be a major issue in a modern well-maintained home, dust getting on the LCD will likely be a problem in more austere environments.

    Below are three video projector examples. The crazy cheap projector was an impulse purchase just to see what I would get for $20. The $70 projector, as my first projector, was a "dipping my toe in the water" purchase just to gain experience with a video projector. The $340 DLP projector purchase reflects my effort to get a higher performance video projector.

    Crazy Cheap Projector (various brands, model YG300): This projector was purchased from a Chinese e-commerce site for $20. YG300 projectors are sold under various brand names on Amazon for $35 to $50. Yes it works (actually, the first one I received didn't work, so it was replaced). While its specifications say it supports 1080P, it is really 240P (native resolution of 320 x 240 pixels). It uses a transmissive LCD. It has a claimed brightness of 400 lumens, but I measured only 16.6 ANSI lumen output. It consumes 21 watts. It lacks keystone correction, and produces a very dim visibly pixelated image. It only handles a 4:3 aspect ratio properly, with "wide screen" aspect ratios being badly squished horizontally. The sound from its built-in speaker is weak and distorted. I would not recommend this projector, not even as a "better than nothing" option.

    AuKing M8-F Projector: This projector, my first, was $70 from Amazon. Again it says it supports 1080P, but it is really 480P projector with a native resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. (For reference, DVDs are 480P (640 x 480).) It uses a transmissive LCD. It has an advertised light output of 7500 lumens, but I measured an output of 96 ANSI lumens. It consumes 50 watts. It has vertical keystone correction. In a darkened room, with the video projected on an 80-inch diagonal area, it is bright enough to enjoyably watch. The sound from its built-in speakers is adequate for a small room, so an external amplifier and speaker system would be beneficial.

    AAXA P7+ Projector: This projector was a $340 Amazon purchase. It is a DLP projector. It "supports" 4K resolution, but is a 1080P projector with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This projector has a claimed maximum "550 LED Lumens" (whatever that is). I measured 388 lumens in its brightest "boost" mode, 332 lumens in its normal mode, and 166 lumens in its "eco" mode. It consumes 34.5 watts in boost mode, 27.7 watts in normal mode, and 16.2 watts in eco mode. It has a built-in battery which is claimed to operate the projector for 2.5 hours in eco mode (I have not tested this). It has vertical keystone correction and handles different aspect ratios properly.

    The AAXA projector has built-in speakers and a fairly powerful amplifier, which is loud enough for a normal-sized residential room. I still plan on using it with an external amplifier and speakers.

    About the only downside to this AAXA projector is that it lacks an A/V input. But, composite video to HDMI converters are fairly inexpensive and work reasonably well.

Projector Screen

    You need a flat white or off-white surface to project against. Most of the inexpensive portable screens you see sold on Amazon utilize a translucent stretchy fabric, so much of the light passes through the screen and is not reflected back toward the audience. Translucent screens might be a benefit if you want to do a rear projection setup (some projectors will allow you to flip the image to facilitate rear projection).

    I have yet to come up with what I consider a suitable projector screen solution for the ZAMT. I have experimented with a couple different cloth solutions (bleached canvas, thick white tablecloth), purchased several commercial screen material samples for testing, and tested different types of white paint. I have also looked at various portable projector screen offerings on Amazon, but the moderately priced screens are all fairly fragile, and may not be sufficiently durable to survive repeated setup and take down.

    I did purchase a pop-up projector screen that looks like it should be fairly durable, but is only 80-inches diagonal (16:9 aspect ratio) - really too small for the ZAMT - just so I have something should the zombie apocalypse come sooner rather than later. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09R97CQDX)

Media Player

    The media player is your video source. This can be a DVD or Blu-ray disc player, a DVR of some sort, a computer, or some some other video player. I have used a Blu-ray player and a modified Nintendo Game Boy Advance (GBA) that outputs composite video as my video sources. I have also played movies from a USB flash drive plugged into the projector.

    The Blu-ray player I am using is a basic model. It attaches to the projector with an HDMI cable, and consumes only two or three watts when operating.

    I modified a Nintendo GBA (model AGB-001) using a commercial kit that allows the game console to output composite video. Most people install this kit so they can play their favorite GBA games on a TV. What many people do not know is that for a couple years in the early 2000s, Nintendo released a series of 35 cartridges containing full-motion animated content. Most were children's cartoons, but three cartridges were feature length animated movies, and one cartridge was a double-feature containing two of the feature-length movies. While the video quality is poor due to compression artifacts and low frame rates, the movies are still enjoyable to watch. (The GBA has a 240 x 160 pixel 2.9-inch diagonal color display. Those cartridges were never intended to be shown on a larger screen.) The GBA runs on two AA cells.

Audio System

    As mentioned above, the built-in speakers in many projectors are fairly weak, necessitating an external sound system of some sort. Initially, I hooked up some computer speakers, which provided plenty of volume for the room where I was testing the projector. Computer speakers would be adequate for a family room or living room, but not for a larger room or outdoors.

    I looked at various sound system options, including "sound bars" and PA speaker systems. After a lot of research, I settled on a moderately priced 50-watt-per-channel class-D stereo amplifier and a pair of bookshelf speakers. Class-D audio amplifiers are very efficient compared to other amplifier types. Class-D amplifiers are also inexpensive and very compact. With the volume on the amplifier turned up to a painfully loud level, the amplifier was drawing 33 watts.

    To get the most out of the sound system, the speakers need to be off the floor or ground. When sitting on the floor or ground, much of the sound will be absorbed by the floor or ground, or audience members sitting near the speakers. Many PA speaker systems come with stands to get the speakers off the ground. There are speaker stands designed to support bookshelf speakers, but it occurred to me that I could just as easily use a couple wood stools I already own.

Independent Power Source

    You will notice that I have been providing power consumption numbers for each component of the ZAMT. Since I plan to use an independent power source, establishing a power budget is necessary.

    I plan to run the ZAMT using a "power station" (a portable package integrating batteries and inverters, such as a Jackery) that can be recharged using a portable solar panel. A generator would be overkill and noisy. Plus, a generator would use gasoline that could be used for other purposes.

Tripod or Platform

    While you can just set the projector on a table, having other options for supporting the projector adds setup flexibility to the ZAMT. Many projectors have a 1/4"-20 threaded insert in the bottom of the projector so they can be mounted on a camera tripod. There are also tripod projector stands that appear to be a traditional tripod with a flat plate on top that the projector can sit on. A TV tray might also be practical, but the TV trays I have encountered were always wobbly and flimsy.

    Whatever method is used to support the projector, it needs to be stable enough to not be toppled by the three cables typically attached to the projector: a power cord, an HDMI or composite video cable, and an audio cable to an external audio system.

Other Equipment Considerations

    Don't forget robust containers to carry and protect your equipment. The cardboard boxes most projectors come in will not provide long term protection. I have purchased carrying cases for my projectors (except the $20 projector), with the AAXA DLP projector being stored in a Harbor Freight hard protective case (a Pelican case clone). The sound system can be adequately protected and transported in an old milk crate.

    As mentioned above, if the projector does not have an A/V input, get a composite-to-HDMI converter. These converters are inexpensive, starting at around ten dollars on Amazon. They typically run on five volts, which can usually be obtained from the USB port on the projector.

    There are also HDMI adapters for cell phones and tablets, if you want to use one of those devices as one of your media players. For example, Apple sells a lightning to HDMI adapter for the iPhone (https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD826AM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter). I don't have experience with Andorid devices, but I see that similar adapters are available from many sources.

    Also factor in redundancy. Get extra audio cables and/or the means to make and repair your own cables. Get spare A/C power supplies for those components that cannot operate off 12 Volts DC. Most of the projectors and media players come with a remote control, and while basic functions can be accessed without a remote control, many features are only accessible when using the remote control. So, get a spare remote control if practical. And, don't forget spare batteries for those remote controls.

    For redundant components, make sure you test them. It would be better to discover you have a new faulty cable now, than discover that the cable is faulty when it cannot be conveniently replaced.

Copyright Issues

    Most consumer motion picture media (Blu-ray discs, DVDs, video cassettes, and even GBA video cartridges) are usually licensed only for home use. Using consumer motion picture media for any kind of public performance violates that license, and is a copyright violation. Home use is limited to "a normal circle of a family and its social acquaintances." (17 U.S.C. § 101 (2020)) Anything more, such as showing the motion picture at a church social event or a neighborhood party, is considered a public performance of that motion picture.

    A motion picture public performance can be lawful if a public performance license is first obtained from the copyright owner or its designated agent. (See the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation (www.mplc.org) for more details on obtaining a license.)

    There are some movies that are in the public domain, and as such could be shown in a "public performance" without obtaining a license. However, the analysis as to which movies are in the public domain is a complex topic outside the scope of this discussion. For example, the 1975 post-apocalyptic movie "A Boy and His Dog", the heartwarming story of the unbreakable bond between a young man and his canine friend, is claimed by several reputable sources to be in the public domain. But, my own research suggests otherwise. In contrast, the 1968 cult classic "Night of the Living Dead" is in the public domain due to the inadvertent omission of a copyright notice in the movie as required at that time by copyright law.

    As a practical matter, in a without-rule-of-law (WROL) zombie apocalypse environment, there may be nobody remaining to grant motion picture public performance licenses.

Security

    In a zombie apocalypse WROL environment, if you can't defend your equipment from others, is it really yours?

    When lawlessness prevails, measures must be taken to protect yourself, your equipment, and your audience. For that matter, in the current environment you may need to consider protective measures in some locales. Protective measures are situation specific and outside the scope of this discussion. Do not neglect planning for protective measures.

Conclusion

    Even before a zombie apocalypse, there are many circumstances where a semi-portable movie theater that can operate "off grid" would be desirable. Those circumstances are limited only by your imagination.

    The ZAMT started off as a thought experiment. I subsequently assembled the various components and verified that they could work together as described. If my use case had been a home theater, a personal backyard/camping theater, or a portable theater business, I would have made different equipment choices.

    The equipment described above is just a snapshot of my current equipment configuration. I expect that equipment mix to continue to evolve.

POTD: Gary, Indiana (plus prepping/survival articles)

Today's selection is a video from the Lord Spoda channel taking a look around Gary, Indiana, including checking out the interior of a cathedral-like church building that has fallen into ruin. Gary was at one time a bustling suburb of Chicago, home to U.S. Steel. Now it is but a crumbling shell of its former self. Besides holding the number 1 or 2 position for highest homicide rate in the nation, Gary has also seen its population fall to less than half of what it was 50 years ago. The result are whole sections of abandoned houses and commercial buildings. While Gary's demographic decline was due to the destruction of the local economy due to the offshoring of steel production, the declining property values, rows of abandoned buildings, and crumbling infrastructure will be the future of most every country over the coming century as populations decline.

  • "Fishing Kayak Setup: How to Build the Ultimate Grab-and-Go Rig"--Field & Stream. There are many cities or locations where bugging out by water may be a better option than trying to leave by car. So, although this article is not a prepping/survival article per se, it has some advice that might be applicable to a water-borne bug out plan.
  • "How to Fix a Flat Bike Tire"--Survival Life. If were to face an economic collapse, or gasoline otherwise became prohibitively expensive, we would see many people turn to bicycles for commuting and running errands, much as you would have seen in many Asian countries 50 or 60 years ago. And if you are forced to bug out by some method other than using a vehicle, I think it would be preferable to bug out using a bicycle rather than walking.
  • "Homemade Soap"--Blue Collar Prepping. The author explains how to make soap using oil, lye and water.
  • "Homeschooling Nuts and Bolts" (Part 1) (Part 2) by R.B., EdD at Survival Blog. The first part discusses why you should consider home schooling your children while the second part covers the topics to include in a home school curriculum. This is a basic overview, so it obviously is not going to have a specific curriculum plan, lists of books, etc.
  • "Five things to know about hunting and eating snakes"--Survival Common Sense Blog. The article discusses venomous snakes and dealing with injured and angry snakes before getting to the cleaning and eating:

    Snakes are very easy to clean and prepare for cooking, and snake meat can be roasted, dried, boiled, fried, or even cooked in a pressure cooker.

    Snakes really only have three internal organs, a heart, a brain, and a tube that handles just about everything else. That means gutting a snake is fairly straightforward; just remove the tube, being careful not to tear or puncture it. Snakes do have a lot of bones, though; deboning a snake is similar to deboning a fish. Once you’ve removed the skin, organs, and bones, you’re ready to cook!

The article links to a few videos on snakes, including one on cleaning and cooking copperheads and another on cleaning and cooking rattlesnakes.

Releasing what it calls a comprehensive synthesis of Burmese python science, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) announced early last month that the giant invasive snakes have now spread beyond their core range in the south Florida Everglades and into places like West Palm Beach and Fort Myers, Florida. The study calls Florida’s python invasion “one of the most intractable invasive-species management problems across the globe.” And it says that, as the snakes continue to spread north, leaving a trail of ecological devastation in their wake, eradication of the species is impossible with existing tools.

  • "How To Open A Can Without A Can Opener"--Survival Cache. By "can opener" the headline is referring to modern can openers as one of the options is to use the can opener "blade" in a knife or multitool. Most of the other options involve grinding away the rim so the top of the can be removed, although this risk introducing metal shavings or dust into the food. You can also try smashing the can to deform it enough that the top can be removed, but this risks losing some of the contents. My recommendation would be to have a couple extra modern can openers with the handles and cutting disks, and then pepper your preps with military P38 or P51 can openers.
  • "How to Turn 'Less' into Everything You Need"--Organic Prepper. The author has been living in Greece for a bit and has some advice based on how the people there have adapted to the austere conditions following the 2009 economic collapse. A big part of its is attitudinal: taking a positive outlook toward what you have as well as taking greater enjoyment from simple things (an example given is going out for coffee instead of an expensive meal). Others are more practical. For instance:

    Ever since the collapse (and perhaps before, I never visited previously) thrift is a way of life. Here, you don’t always have hot water. You have to turn your water heater on about 20 minutes before you need it. This saves on electricity because you’re only heating up the water for 20 minutes a day. If you’re careful, enough water will remain in the tank for you to wash your dishes and have at least warmish water for handwashing during the rest of the day.

    Nobody has dryers and every street you walk down has laundry on lines flying like flags from apartment balconies. There’s no HOA nonsense here. Every balcony is loaded with laundry, tomato plants, and herbs. Rooftops have solar panels and water tanks. Electricity is used in the smallest amounts possible at all times.

    Part of this is that the price here has skyrocketed. Now, it’s all relative. I was pleasantly surprised when my first electric bill was just 43 Euros ($46.50 USD), but if I only made 800-1000 a month, the typical wage for a Greek, that would be pretty devastating.

    If you were to leave your water heater on all day or your heat or air conditioner on while you stepped out, locals would look at you as though you’d completely lost your mind.

However, there are some things that people should do anytime they venture into avalanche terrain. Those include not going out alone, carrying an avalanche transceiver, a probe, a shovel and also knowing how to use these important safety items.

  • "Gear Stowage"--Blue Collar Prepping.  The author discusses using the Cole-Tac Popcorn Bag for a trauma kit to keep everything in place and easily accessible. She also discusses using USMC Issue Speed Reload Pouches for her ballistic vest as it will hold in place either 9mm stick magazines or AR15 magazines. She uses a 9mm PCC for home defense, but plans on a 5.56 for SHTF, but wanted a magazine pouch that would work with both so she didn't have to remove one pouch in order to make room for the other.
  • "How to Make Your Own Seed Starting Mix and Start Seedlings"--Organic Prepper. An excerpt:

    Last year I ended up paying $85 for seedlings because my starts were too runted and diseased to use. It was an excellent investment, however, paying off in food more than 10x my investment. So buying is a viable way to go.

    Starting your own seedlings, however, is much cheaper, plus you get to choose your exact desired varieties. Garden centers will have varieties that grow well in your area, but if you want to try anything a bit more exotic, they can’t help you. Also, if you’re making an emergency run, as I did, you get to pick from what they have left. Starting your own means, you get to pick what you want. 

    Spring is the best time to plant trees because spring planting allows trees to get established earlier, grow more, and do better when hot weather arrives. Spring planting is especially important for bare root stock. Most containerized and container-grown stock, as well as balled and burlapped trees, can be planted throughout the growing season, but benefit from spring plantings.

    When transporting trees, protect them from excessive wind, drying, and rough handling. Planting holes should be dug at least two feet wider than the size of the root system. Trees should be planted an inch or so higher than the depth they grew in the container or nursery to allow for settling. Air pockets should be eliminated through watering and tamping after planting. Fill in the hole with a mixture of existing soil and soil amendments such as organic material or loamy top soil.

Yes, you can survive by eating ants. Though tiny, ants contain lots of protein and a good assortment of vitamins and minerals. However, you’ll have to catch a bunch of them in order to make a sizable portion of food.

  • "How Much Protein You Need"--Modern Survival Blog. The author notes that recommendations vary according to the source and potential bias toward a more vegetarian diet. The CDC, according to the article, recommends that 10-35% of your daily calories come from proteins. The article also includes the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for protein for the different sexes and age groups:

    A boulder weighing more than 40 tonnes sits on the sand high above the ocean. Dwarfing every other rock in view, it is conspicuously out of place. The answer to how this massive outlier got here lies not in the vast expanse of the Atacama Desert behind it but in the Pacific Ocean below. Hundreds of years ago, a tsunami slammed into the northern Chilean coast—a wall of water 20 meters high, taller than a six-story building, that swept boulders landward like pebbles.

    The tsunami that lobbed this behemoth happened before written records existed in Chile. But we know about it today thanks to the detective work of a small group of researchers who are uncovering the signs of ancient tsunamis around the globe. Using a diverse array of scientific techniques, these paleotsunami researchers have found evidence of previously undocumented colossal waves. In the process, their work is revealing that coastal communities could be in far more danger from tsunamis than they realize.

    As scientists expand their search, they have continued to find ancient tsunamis bigger than those found in historical records, says James Goff, a paleotsunami researcher at the University of Southampton in England. The implications are clear: if a huge tsunami happened once in a given location, it could happen again. The question is whether we’re prepared for it.

I'd read somewhere that a lot of cities founded in ancient times--e.g., Athens, Rome, Paris, London, Tokyo, etc.--are located well inland from their harbors, and the author speculated it might have been because of experience with ancient tsunamis. 

    The BBC and the mainstream media regularly frighten everyone with the latest climate disaster news with pictures of floods, fires and hurricanes, always followed by scary predictions that things will only get worse unless mankind mends its irresponsible ways.

    My alma mater Reuters, the global news agency, used to be above all this hysteria and would relentlessly apply its traditional standards of fairness and balance, but even this mainstream outfit seems to have sold out to the hysterics and axe grinders.

    The trouble is, many if not all of these disaster stories, far from being another step in a worsening scenario, are often nothing of the kind. In a recent book Unsettled. What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn’t, And Why It Matters, Steven Koonin uses the UN’s Intergovernmental  Panel on Climate Change data to show that if reporters took the trouble to do a minimum amount of checking, most of these incidents would appear to be natural disasters, yes, but not part of some ever worsening syndrome.

    Economist Bjorn Lomborg has been pointing out for years that humans are having an impact on the climate, but technology will be a match for any problems. Current Government plans to combat climate change will squander massive amounts of taxpayers’ money and achieve very little in terms of stopping rising global temperature, Lomborg says.

    Warmist politicians and lobby groups regularly trash the work of a significant group of climate experts, insulting them with unfounded accusations that they can’t be taken seriously because they have barely perceptible links with ‘Big Oil’ and are ‘climate change deniers’. Criticisms are mainly personal and not aimed at their work. Koonin and Lomborg also suffer the unethical ‘denier’ slur, so let’s destroy that canard first.

    Every scientist knows the world’s climate has been gradually and occasionally irregularly warming since the last Ice Age over about 10,000 years. Nobody denies the climate is changing. The ‘denier’ charge is nonsensical. But it performs the useful function of making clear the user knows nothing about climate science. The argument is about the ‘why’ not the ‘if’. Warmists say all the warming is because of man’s activity. The rest say some, a little or none.

    Education is another area where balance has been replaced by hysteria-inducing propaganda. Children shown demonstrating on the news are often borderline hysterical. No doubt their teachers didn’t bother to tell them that man-made global warming is a theory not a proven fact, and that it’s okay to talk about different opinions.   

    If you wonder why much of the mainstream media seem united in accepting that the world will soon die unless humans don hair shirts, freeze in winter and walk instead of driving, you need to know about websites like Covering Climate Now (CCN).

    Reuters and some of the biggest names in the news like Bloomberg, Agence France Presse, CBS News, and ABC News have signed up to support CCN, which brags that it is an unbiased seeker after the truth. But this claim won’t last long if you peer behind the façade. CCN may claim to be fair and balanced, but it not only won’t tolerate criticism, it brandishes the unethical ‘denier’ weapon with its nasty holocaust denier echoes. This seeks to demonise those who disagree with it by savaging personalities and denying a hearing, rather than using debate to establish its case.

    CCN advises journalists to routinely add to stories about bad weather and flooding to suggest climate change is making these events more intense. This is not an established fact, as a simple routine check would show.

    I asked CCN about the nature of its dealings with Reuters and the likes of Bloomberg. Was it to thrash out a general approach to climate change reporting or to be more partisan?

    CCN hasn’t replied.

POTD: Abandoned Ames Department Store

This video is a bit different than most because the intro and outro show what the stores were like in their heyday, and gives you some background on the Ames chain. A couple things in particular to note once it gets to exploring the department store. Because of the limited amount of glass around the entrance, the store is much darker than, for instance, an abandoned grocery store that we looked at several months ago that had windows down the entire width of the store front. Also, and we've seen this in other larger retails chains, is the distances inside the building. This can be a factor both in whether your flashlight can cast a beam far enough to pick out details on a far wall, or, in a post-SHTF, you had to use your weapon against an attacker or vicious animal that happened to be in the structure.

  • "EMP How Long Does It Disable My Electronics"--Modern Survival Online. A generalized discussion of EMP and the factors that could contribute to your electronics merely needing to be rebooted or being destroyed. I remember reading with some interest when the EMP Commission's report came out that some of their testing only resulted in devices shutting and just had to be restarted (e.g., an automobile they tested comes to mind). So I guess the gist of this is that don't assume that an EMP will necessarily zap everything. 
No, the majority of batteries will not be affected by an EMP of any size. This applies to lead-acid, alkaline, nickel metal hydride, and lithium-ion batteries. Any electronics attached to the battery, such as a charge controller, will be ruined.

    • Relying solely on a galvanized trash can for EMP protection may not be enough at approximately 40dB attenuation.
    • Multiple layers of shielding / protection may increase overall EMI attenuation (EMP protection).
    • Multi-layer shielding such as wrapped aluminum foil inside galvanized trashcan may help to meet MIL spec (Insulate contents and layers from each other).

        • "SurvivalBlog: Infectious Disease in the TEOTWAWKI World, Parts 1 to 6, by Militant Medic"--American Partisan. American Partisan did us the favor of providing the web addresses to all 6 parts of the cited articles on infectious disease (i.e., he has the addresses, but they are not links that you can just click--you will have to highlight the address and either copy it to your address bar or right click and choose the "go to web address" option). The author of the series indicates that he is a physician that has been practicing for 11 years. Although this is a valuable resource, recognize that it is just a summary of a very complex subject. Think of it as an introduction for which you will need to follow up in more detail. The first few parts go over germs and the different types of veterinary/pet antibiotics you can get and for what they should be used. The last two articles discusses specific diseases/infections and the appropriate antibiotic. 
        • "Emergency Preparedness: Factors to Consider Before Bugging Out"--The Mag Life. An excerpt:
            The disadvantages to bugging out are many. First, though you may miss your bug-out window if you delay, historically true bug-out events are relatively rare. I lived in a large urban area during the food shortages, increased crime, civil disorder, and protests of 2020, but none of these events ever approached the need to bug out from our residence. The threat was present but did not outweigh the advantages of sheltering in place.

            Your residence’s resources are the next consideration. Before you leave your home, recognize the advantages that will be lost bugging out. Even without services, your home provides shelter, space, a familiar defensible location, large storage capacity (food, water, medical supplies, clothes), beds, and some waste management and cooking supplies. The decision to bug out takes your entire residence’s resources and familiarity and reduces them to what you, your family, and (if included) your vehicle, can transport.

This, as you might already know, is a small fire pit or hole which is connected under the ground to a second hole which provides the needed air flow. The result is that you can hide your fire below the surface of the ground.
        • "How to Start a Fire"--Outdoor Life. A very detailed article on this subject. An excerpt:
            There are four stages to building a fire: fire preparation, fire starting, fire maintenance, and fire extinguishing. 

            Fire preparation is the act of locating a spot to build a fire, clearing debris from around the central hearth that could accidentally catch, and assembling all the components you need prior to starting. 

            Fire starting is the act of striking a match, scraping a ferro rod, catching a piece of tinder on fire, or otherwise initially igniting your fire. Fire starting is where the three requirements for fire, heat, air, and fuel must come together in the right ratio to burn properly. These requirements are often referred to as the “fire triangle” and when a fire is not burning well, you can troubleshoot which of the components is lacking. 

            Fire maintenance requires you to stoke the fire, add fuel to it as necessary, position logs to achieve more or less flame, and otherwise keep the fire going as long as you need it to burn.  
         
            Fire extinguishing is the process of dowsing your fire, moving the firewood to the outside of the fire ring, making sure there are no hot spots left behind, and making sure the fire is no longer burning. Your fire should start with an understanding of the final stage first as it is not wise to build a fire you cannot put out.

        • "Prepper's Toolbox: Adhesives"--Blue Collar Prepping. Give recipes and instructions on making a traditional flour paste and pine pitch glue.
        • "Leave a Message"--Blue Collar Prepping. In a disaster, you might be able to call, text, or email someone. The author goes over various ways to leave messages for others, both historical (such as hobo codes) and modern and some supplies you should keep on hand.
        • "Edible Survivors" by James Thompson, Unz Review.  In 1972, an airplane carrying the 45 team members of the Uruguayan rugby team, families and friends crashed high in the Andes mountains. The survivors were forced to cannibalize the bodies of the dead to survive. It's a long article, but worth the read. A relatively short excerpt:
            What was required of survivors in this situation? Everything, one might assume.

            Roberto Canessa summed up the essentials:

            Team spirit, persistence, sympathy for others, intelligence and, above all, hope.

            Their situation was parlous. They were in this dreadful situation because of pilot error. The navigator was at the back of the plane playing cards, the pilots were over-confident, and did not bother to check the one instrument which would could have saved them: their wristwatches. Had they done so they would have realized they were turning North far too soon, and had not allowed for the headwinds against them. They had not yet gone far enough West, were not yet out of the Andes, and mistakenly descended North into the high mountain peaks. After hitting a mountain which tore off the wings, the fuselage careered down a glacier and slammed into snow.

            They had many dead, and many injured they had to care for. It was reasonable to believe that planes would come to search for them, and some of those planes could be heard and seen overhead for the next 8 days of search, though they found nothing. Temperatures went down to -30 Centigrade at night, so to keep from freezing to death was essential. Body warmth was their sole source of heat as they huddled together in the remains of the fuselage. Most of them had never seen snow, and had no idea how to survive in high altitudes.

            Some days later, when a small group ventured out into the snowy desolation, they all suffered from the bitter cold, one went snow blind, and the lack of implements to help them through the snow showed how helpless they were. Not encouraging. Staying put and waiting for rescue seemed better.

            How to survive?

            To provide drinking water, Fito Strauch worked out that snow collected in an aluminium shell would catch the sun’s rays and provide a trickle of meltwater, which they shared in very small gulps. He also designed improvised sun glasses to combat snow blindness. They used seat covers as protective clothing and footwear.

            Roy Harley improvised an antenna so that a transistor radio they found hidden in a seat could provide them with news, the first being that the search had been abandoned. He also tried to get the batteries and remains of the radio receiver to build a transmitter, a task which understandably proved impossible. The batteries they found were of the wrong voltage to power the available equipment, even if they had been able to assemble it.

            The survivors who had found the rear of the fuselage came up with an idea to use insulation foam from the rear of the fuselage, sewed together with copper wire, and waterproof fabric that covered the air conditioning of the plane to fashion a sleeping bag. Nando Parrado and Carlos Paez led the work on this.

            Those with medical knowledge did a triage of the wounded, including removing a shaft of metal from a person’s intestines.

            In short, when they did not know what to do, they improvised, and innovated. Such knowledge as they had of medicine, mechanics, navigation and engineering was put to good purpose.

            When Nando Parrado, Roberto Canessa anid Antonio Vizintin set off on their final rescue mission, they had no technical gear or clothing, no compass, and no climbing experience. Vizintin went back after 3 days, because there was not enough food.

            As a matter of painful observation, and guidance from the few who had medical knowledge about the Krebs cycle (the body can convert protein into sugar, and fat into protein, so that on a meat only diet they could survive without malnutrition), it was obvious to the starving survivors that they needed to eat energy rich protein to survive. In ordinary conditions, warm temperatures at sea level, 2000 calories of food would be sufficient. Under sedentary conditions in the cold high glacier, 3,600 to 4,300 calories would be needed. For highly strenuous work in the cold, like climbing up a mountain, 4,200 to 5,000 calories would be required. (British soldiers training in Norway get 5000 calories, and an officer told me “You have to stand over them at breakfast to make sure they eat it”).

            The fact that the world had abandoned them within a few days made them better able to feel justified in abandoning the taboo about not eating human flesh. Initially they spoke about this in whispers, then in small group deniable hypotheticals, then finally in open discussion. Not all agreed, though the lack of any rescue plans was an eventual clincher for most. For everyone’s protection, a small group made the first cut in the actual bodies, and gave it to others to further cut and dry the flesh strips in the sun, so that all could eat without knowing whose flesh it was.

            So, survivors needed to solve an existential calculus: they could live only on the bodies of the dead, their only source of fuel (and protein). In order to just wait for rescue, and to do the daily tasks on which their immediate survival depended, they needed about 4000 calories each. They had to count the bodies, count the survivors, and count the days. When there were more survivors, before the avalanche which killed 8, each body supplied food for three days. (One survivor was 85 kilos before the crash, and below 38 Kilos when rescued, a typical drop in body mass). To complicate matters, the escape party needed 5000 calories each per day of travel, extra clothing taken from others, and relief from doing daily tasks as they built up their strength.

            Every day of preparation depleted combustibles, but every day they waited reduced the chance of snow falls, and improved conditions for the escape party. One survivor had said that it never snowed in December, but in the early days of that month there was a massive snowstorm, which did not seem a good omen. Canessa argued for a postponement of another week. There were 16 alive and 27 dead when the three-person team set off on 12 December.

            At all stages, the group tried to reason their way out of the life and death puzzle box in which they were incarcerated. For example, they selected those they though most likely to survive the journey, (based on physique and, crucially, strength of character) and altered the selection as circumstances changed during preparations.
