Israel Launches Air Strike Against Qatar

Axios reports that "Israel conducts airstrike in Qatar to assassinate Hamas officials." Although leaving out the part that it was an airstrike, the New York Post also reports that "Israel targets Hamas leaders with strike on Qatar’s capital." It really says a lot about a country that it feels free to launch military attacks against any country it feels like. Part of its "rise and kill first" philosophy. But if it was any nation other than Israel, it would be referred to as a rogue state. It would certainly raise eyebrows if Russia bombed a building in Warsaw or Berlin in order to kill Ukrainian officials meeting there.

In any event, the attack seems to have been intended to disrupt cease fire negotiations with Hamas, with the Axios article noting that "[t]he strike took place when Hamas leaders met to discuss the Trump administration's proposal," and "[a] senior intelligence official said 'the entire Hamas A-list was in the building' when the bombs struck." The Post's article similarly relates that "Qatar’s Al Jazeera television, citing a Hamas source, said the attack was aimed at Hamas Gaza ceasefire negotiators," adding that "[t]he assault is likely to deal a serious, if not fatal blow to efforts to reach a ceasefire, especially since it took place in the Gulf Arab country Qatar, which has hosted several rounds of talks." Thus the attack should be interpreted as Israel signaling that it does not want a ceasefire.
