POTD: Abandoned Cars

Source: "Mesmerising photographs show once-gleaming vehicles abandoned and transformed by nature into eerie artifacts in strange and isolated parts of Europe and America"--Daily Mail. The photographs are apparently from a book, Lost Wheels - The Nostalgic Beauty of Abandoned Cars, by photographer Dieter Klein.

  1. Weird thing I learned: tons of old cars in Fairbanks, AK. Why? Too expensive to recycle 'em, so they (ALL OF THEM) just sit and rot.

    1. Cost is a powerful motivator. When I was living in Japan (late 80's) the cost of repairing bicycles was prohibitive versus buying a new bicycle (these were just one-speed bikes used for commuting), so old bicycles would pile up at intersections and under overpasses, and once a year, the local government would come in and scoop up all of the bicycles into a large trucks and haul them off. But that only applied as to bikes on public property. Empty lots near apartment buildings would often have piles of discarded bicycles, in which we (being poor missionaries) would sometimes scrounge around for parts to fix our bikes. Sometimes motor scooters would be treated the same way. There were a couple missionaries that fixed one up to ride around just using parts from other abandoned scooters.
