POTD: Caves on Elephanta Island

This photo is from "Once-holy sites left to crumble: Haunting images show abandoned sacred buildings, from inner-city USA to the Yorkshire coast," featuring photographs from the book Abandoned Sacred Places by Lawrence Joffe. The caption for the photograph above reads: "Some of the most exquisite sculptures honouring the Hindu deity Shiva are found in a cluster of caves on Elephanta Island, 10km (six miles) off the coast of Mumbai (Bombay). Bas-reliefs show mounted gods, including Indra on his cloud-elephant, Brahma on a lotus and Vishnu on his winged manservant Garuda."
