Weekend Reading

Greg Ellifritz has posted a new Active Response Training "Weekend Knowledge Dump". Lots of links to good articles and videos on self-defense, firearms, prepping/survival, and more. Some items that jumped out to me were:

  • An article describing some simple fixes to make your AK better--some modifications to the rear sight, adding a heat shield to the hand guard (if it doesn't have one already), options for mounting lights, some better ways to attach slings, polishing the rails, and upgrades to the safety and grip.
  • As you might know, I have an article on updating the feed throat on an old Marlin 60 rifle, so I was pleased to see that Greg included a link to an article outlining the changes to the Marlin 60 over its long production history.
  •  Massad Ayoob's piece on 5 cases to settle or take a plea bargain.
  • A note that Walther has paused production of the Walther PP, PPK, and PPK/s line of handguns in order to make some unspecified design changes. I was going to post about this today as well, but I might as well make my comments now. The press release and articles paraphrasing the press release that I've seen indicate that the line is undergoing "a multi-year reengineering and modernization program". What Walther intends on doing is unspecified, but "[t]his initiative aims to enhance performance, integrate advanced manufacturing technologies, and elevate the user experience—all while preserving the iconic look, feel, and spirit that have defined these pistols for generations." If I were to hazard a guess, I suspect that Walther will copy what Beretta has been doing to some of its iconic firearms--better sights, maybe a light rail and/or optic mount option, changes to the safety and/or safety lever, coming standard with a threaded barrel, and changes to address long term complaints about the platform such as the slide bite issue or problems feeding hollow point bullets.
