Retro AR Build: The Colt Model 711

The Kommando Blog describes his clone (sort of) of the Colt Model 711 in this article: "Colt Model 711: The M16A2 We Deserved." The author indicates that the Model 711 were an M16A2 "export rifle" being, essentially, "A1’s with A2 furniture, compensators, and full shelf lowers and retain full auto capabilities. Later in production these guns would use 'C7' uppers which were A1 spec but with an A2 style brass deflector forged into the receiver." Apparently they were a hodgepodge of parts, so even though he made some changes to his build (e.g., using an A2 flash hider rather than the A1 version), he thought it was still something that Colt could have shipped.

  • As an aside from the article: "Little known additional fact about the A2 comp- the closed tines on the bottom were designed such that when using the 3 round burst setting, all 3 rounds would impact into a torso sized target at 200 yards."

Essentially, his build retained the 20" pencil barrel of the A1 (albeit with a 1:7 twist), an A2 front sight post, A2 hand guards, and the C7 upper which "retains the sight system of the M16A1 with a few A2 touches like a round forward assist button and a brass deflector for left handed shooters" (but he used the A2 flip sight), and the transitional (M16A1E1) grip. He also went with the slightly shorter A1 Type E buttstock.

He gives his review and thoughts about shooting this, and also includes the names of some of his parts sources.

I like the idea of this build, combining the best of the A1 with the A2 models, but retaining the lighter weight of the A1 (I don't think the heavier barrel in the A2 is as big an advantage for the civilian shooter as it might have been for the troops due to the fact civilians aren't going to be shooting in automatic and it saves a substantial amount of weight to use the pencil profile).
