A timeline in headlines:
- Oct. 9: "Erdogan warns Herzog against collective punishment for Gaza"--Times of Israel. "Erdogan" is, of course, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan while "Herzog" is Israeli President Isaac Herzog (Israel has both a President and a Prime Minister).
- Oct. 11: "Erdogan Slams US Decision to Deploy Warships Over Gaza"--Yahoo.
- Oct. 11: "Movement of US warships toward Israel could lead to ‘massacres’: Turkish president"--The Hill.
- Oct. 15: "Turkish navy heads to East Med for exercise amid US tension"--Daily Sabah.
- Oct. 16: "Erdoğan warns Sunak: Don’t stoke Israel-Hamas crisis"--Politico. "Sunak" is U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
- Oct. 17: "Türkiye kicks off five-day naval drill in eastern Med"--Hurriyet Daily News.
The deployment of U.S. carrier groups to support Israel, together with U.S. forces shooting down a Turkish drone operating against U.S. backed Kurdish terrorists in Syria, is making Turkey unhappy. The current naval drill, which runs through Oct. 20, involves live fire which will, obviously, limit areas where the U.S. Navy can operate. Turkey will also be conducting an annual "search and rescue" drill with Turkish Cyprus from Oct. 23 to 27.
