Major Climate Paper Published by Nature Withdrawn After Flaws Exposed

The journal Nature has withdrawn a widely publicized paper on global warming. The paper, "Quantification of ocean heat uptake from changes in atmospheric O2 and CO2 composition," "claimed that the oceans have been warming faster than previously thought. It was announced, in news outlets including the BBC, the New York Times, the Washington Post and Scientific American that this meant that the Earth may warm even faster than currently estimated."

Although the paper was peer reviewed and published in one of the most prestigious scientific journals, it was quickly discovered after publication that the author's statistical methods were seriously flawed.

The man that discovered the errors, Nic Lewis, stated that "[t]he climate field needs to get professional statisticians involved up front if it is going to avoid this kind of embarrassment in future." Ouch!
