"We Built This City"

Instapundit linked to a piece by Roger Simon entitled "Mamdani and the Rise and Fall of Great Cities." It is an op-ed about the consequences should Zohran Mamdani win the New York mayoral race, with Simon arguing it would result in a mass exodus of Jews from the city. However, this comment from Simon caught my attention not only because it is so clearly false, but the incredible hubris it reveals: "But NYC was largely (not exclusively of course) built by Jews in almost every area of life. Jesse Jackson called it 'hymie town' for a reason, obnoxious as that term was. We can, and have, built great things in other places and other times." They certainly created the conditions that allowed Mamdani the opportunity to become mayor.

  1. In 1880, the Jewish population of NYC was roughly 80,000. That is out of a population of 1,200,000. 7%. By 1920 the Jewish population was 1.5 million out of a population of 5.6 million. Roughly 20%. So they didn't build the city before 1900.
