Disadvantages of the 3-1/2 Inch Chambering

Chuck Hawks has an article reviewing the disadvantages to having a shotgun chambered for 3-1/2 inch shells. To summarize:

1) Weaker receiver.
2) Longer, heavier receiver.
3) Slower cycling.
4) Heavier than necessary barrel.
5) Dangerously excessive recoil.
6) Thicker, heavier components subject to recoil.
7) Degraded patterning of standard length shells.
8) Longer (and thus, less efficient) shot column than standard length shells.
9) Not as compact, responsive, or as intuitive to operate as it would be if the action was designed around standard length shells.
