Shooting News Weekly notes that Americans now own more than 530 million firearms. With the current population of the United States sitting at 340 million, that means that is 1.56 firearms per person. Gun ownership is not distributed evenly, though. Only about 40% of households have firearms. Firearm ownership is much more prevalent among those living in rural areas, Republicans, men, and whites. And the vast majority of gun owners (72%) own a firearm for self-defense.
