While this may seem to you like a trillion dollars down the toilet, it is only because you do not understand the purpose of the U.S. military. While you may believe that the Department of Defense is supposed to protect the United States from foreign aggression, its primary role is actually procurement--the bigger and more expensive the weapon system, the better. The design of the F-35 is so flawed, the plane should be scrapped; but whatever happens, Congress will allot more money to replace or fix it. Thus, viewed from the perspective of the DOD's primary mission, the F-35 is an outstanding success.
